The Ancient Madder has an important place in the history of British tie making.
It is a silk dyed and printed by hand usually with geometrical or Paisley patterns, its colours are intense and deep but never shiny and its finish is matte and almost chalk like. The hand feel of the Ancient Madder is in fact soft and like “peach skin” according to some connoisseurs.
In order to obtain this unique fabric, the twill silk called “gum silk”, because it is treated with arabic gum is soaked in natural Madder (originally an extract of Rubia Tinctorum plant) and indigo dyes, a costly and time-consuming process. The result is a silk that absorbs light rather than reflecting it
Madder ties were a staple of the Ivy style popular in a limited number of American universities of the Atlantic Coast during the mid-20th century and they are, since the beginning, an exquisite product, for real connoisseurs and lovers of the classical menswear.
The authentic Ancient Madder is crafted nowadays only by a handful of manifacturers. We are therefore proud to offer to our customers ties made by hand in Italy and realized in such a scarce silk handcrafted in England.
